OTA Bruce Childs Award to Kevin Herrington

Andrew Kokelj, President of the Alliston Tennis Club presents
the OTA Bruce Childs Award to Kevin Herrington
at Mike’s Family Restaurant.

Alliston Tennis Club held their 43rd Annual General Meeting at Mike’s

Family Restaurant October 25 2018.
In addition to the regular business meeting, Andrew Kokelj, President
of the ATC presented the Bruce Childs Memorial Award to
Kevin Herrington.
The Bruce Childs Memorial Award was established by the Ontario
Tennis Association to recognize an executive member or dedicated
club volunteer who has made an outstanding contribution to his
community tennis club for an extended period of time. Bruce Childs
was a long time volunteer at his
community club in Toronto.

In his younger days Kevin played hockey in College, professionally
in England.
But it was his dedication to teaching tennis, particularly with Juniors
for nearly 12 years that has made a difference at our club. He and
his wife Debbie have raised two outstanding daughters, Rebecca
and Victoria. Rebecca is now attending Ball State University, Indiana
on a tennis scholarship. The family have been loyal supporters of
tennis at the club encouraging participation in Alliston and the
surrounding area.

Sadly, Head Coach Kevin Herrington has retired from our club.
Kevin has opened a new chicken restaurant in Mount Forest.

We offer our thanks for his devoted service to our club and
wish him much success in his new restaurant venture.

Respectfully submitted

OTA 100th Anniversary Drop-In Retro Night at the ATC Courts

OTA 100th Anniversary Drop-In Retro Night at the ATC Courts

With lovely weather, we enjoyed a great night celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the OTA on Friday June 29th at the Alliston Tennis Club. The Drop-In nights was  open to members and non-members with players enjoying using many of the old familiar raquets of the past. The names Wilson Jack Kramer, Dunlop Maxply, Chris Evert, Slazenger, Spalding, Prince and Donnay rekindled youthful memories for all. Instead of just limiting play to one court, players used them on all the courts. Once the cobwebs were shaken off, there were many lively rallies and games throughout the evening.

The highlight was provided by Mike Cooper, who brought his parents' wonderful collection of vintage tennis raquets to display for the members. His father Alex built many courts in North York in the 1960'3 and 1970's and wrote many articles on tennis. Mike played with a Slazenger raquet that his mother Grace used to become a Tennis champion. He hoped there was still some magic left to help him win a few more games.

Special thanks to Cassandra, Deb, Chris, Gord, Mike, Roger, Ron,and Shane for making it a fun night. Sounds like there might be a retro tournament in the future.
