Rules of protocol and common courtesy have been created over the years. All tennis players should be aware of them and abide by them. Please keep the following in mind.
1. Talk quietly when standing near tennis courts that are in use.
2. Never stand between the courts when play is in progress.
3. Wait until a point is over before walking behind a court where a game is in progress.
4. Always have a can of balls with you; everyone should take turns supplying tennis balls that are not old or worn.
5. Never interfere with another court when play is in progress:
- to retrieve a ball from another court or to return a ball to another court, wait until the point in progress on that court is completed
- balls can also be returned carefully at the back of the court along the fence
6. As the server, announce the set score before starting a game and announce the game score before serving each point.
7. If players cannot agree on a score, return to the last known score and resume play from that point.
8. Do not return an “out” serve. Either let it go or hit it into the net.
9. Call line calls on your side of the court. Only call “out” balls & only use the word “out”. Balls should be called “in” if there is any doubt.
10. When returning a ball to your opponent(s), do not hit it back at random; call the receiver’s name or “ball coming”.
11. If you are playing against a player of lesser skill, try to play down your own game out of courtesy to the other player. (We were all beginners once!)
12. If there are players waiting, please adhere to the 40 minute time limit.
13. Please, no profanity at the courts. Thanks.
